Granny Square Beanie - a quick and easy winter warmer.

Picture

I knitted up this thick and thin yarn beanie in an evening. The only tricky part is the pick ups along the edges of the square - if you feel confident, forge ahead! The hat is light and scrunches up into a very small space. It now lives in Victoria with one of my Australian grandchildren. There is no sewing involved!

Materials
Approx 50gr thick and thin merino handspun and felted yarn, or any yarn to suit gauge.
Knitting needles size 6mm
Gauge: 12 sts and 24 r to 10cm (4”)
Sizes: small (child-small adult), medium, large.

Abbreviations
KFB; knit into the front and back of the stitch (makes 1 stitch), PUE: pick up one stitch from edge of square, K: knit, sl: slip stitch onto other needle, k2tog: knit next two stitches together, psso: pass slipped stitch over previous k2tog, dec: decrease.

Instructions

Start with a granny square as follows:
Make a loop and knit into front, back, front of the loop. (3 st). Turn.
All alternate rows: k to end, turn.
Row 3: KFB first 2 sts, k1, turn.
Row 5: KFB 1st stitch, k to last 2 sts, KFB, K1
Cont in pattern until work measures 9 (9.5, 10) cm. when relaxed, finishing with an odd numbered row.
Knit one row.
Now begin decrease as follows: K1, K2tog, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.
Continue in garter stitch as set, dec every odd-numbered row until there are 3 st.
Next row: sl1, k2tog, psso. Leave loop on the needle and start working the crown as follows:
Row 1: pick up 1 stitch along crown to the left of the needle, KFB of the held stitch, turn.
Row 2 and continuing alternate rows: K to end.
Row 3: PUE, k to last 2 st, K2tog, K1.

Continue repeating last two rows, picking up 16(17, 18) sts along each edge of the square. When you reach the next corner, start dec along bottom edge while still picking up 1 st every 2nd row along the square.
Continue as set until you reach the last corner of the granny square.

Join seam as follows:
Row 1: pick up one stitch on seam edge, turn.
Row 2: K 2tog, K to last 3 st,  K2tog, K1.
Repeat  these two rows until 3 st remain. K2tog, sl1, PSSO. Draw through the last st and finish off both loose ends.
